I Shall Never Again Be Afraid

So, you remember that wedding vest swatch I've been working on? I finished it, cast off the other night. And then I cut the steek. No reinforcements, no stiff drinks (I was at work). I just cut the thing. I was going to say that I cut it with wild abandon, but it was really more like careful deliberation. Then I picked up stitches along one side of the cut and made a little garter stitch band. The other side is still raw. And guess what? Nothing bad happened.

No pictures yet, as I haven't had time. I immediately cast on for a Shedir in Silky Wool. Remember my friend Daphne, who was showing us the chapel in this post? They've found malignant cells in her bile duct, so on Friday she's have a Whipple operation. I'm not sure what will come after that, but I'm making this for her because it's one constructive thing I can do right now. David & I will be visiting her tomorrow while we're up that way. I doubt I'll have it finished by then, but I want at least to have made a good start.

Gee, I can make "something bad" happen on plain, unsteeked garter stitch. I think it might have a little something to do with the level of talent with the knitting...

I'm so sorry to hear about Daphne. I hope that all goes well and I'm sure that she will greatly appreciate a knitted gift. Keeping the spirits up during recovery is such a big part of the healing process. I'll be thinking good thoughts.

Yikes, that's quite a procedure. My boss had a whipple for pancreatic cancer a couple of years ago. Remarkably, he seems cancer free at the moment. It was a success!

Good call. When in doubt, knit. I hope she gets through it all okay.

The poor darling...that looks mighty frightening. I hope everything goes smoothly for her.

Mel, I'm so sorry to hear about Daphne. I'll be keeping her in my thoughts. I know first hand how difficult it is to watch a friend suffer; I'll be keeping you in my thoughts too.

Did you use a scalpel to cut the swatch?? Best wishes, thoughts, prayers with Daphne... I spent the weekend with my friend, helping care for her actively dying husband. He went fairly quietly and remarkably not in pain on Sunday. Life sure isn't for the weak, sometimes it sure sucks!

Hi Mel. Knitting for a sick friend or loved one is good therapy and the gifts are always appreciated. I hope Daphne comes through the surgery well.
