I'm dead tired and about to go to bed. But I couldn't without sharing this photo of the first flower to open in my flower beds. I came home from work this morning to find it. It's not a crocus, as one might expect, but rather an
Iris reticulata, a tiny, extremely early species iris that propagates by bulb rather than by rhizome.

I love these. They're very hardy - essentially zero care - and even though the blossoms are fairly short-lived, they're just gorgeous and such a welcome splash of color. You can see a second one coming up that will probably be open by tomorrow.
Spring really is here.
After living in VT & NH for most of my life I know how exciting it is to see the first flower of Spring. :)
ReplyDeleteGee, I don't know, Mel. I'm only a few minutes away from you and I haven't seen a single flower of any sort in my yard. Not fair!
ReplyDeleteMaybe my monitor is wonky...but it looks like a Mel Sweater Flower.
ReplyDeleteMy botanist husband keeps saying that is not an iris in bloom in maine on march 29! Is it under glass or something?
ReplyDeleteOOoohh how jealous I am of your Siberian iris! Mine are only inch-high little green shoots.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I did see blooming crocus in two separate yards yesterday.
oh, my, I love irises. Yay, spring!
ReplyDelete(erm, dontcha love the existential-ness of Blogger's "choose an identity" prompt? Yes, I do believe I will choose another identity today, perhaps one with better hair...)
So pretty. I love that variety of iris. Can't get them to grow worth beans in my yard.
